ISO 50001: The standard for better energy management

ISO 50001: What it’s all about and how you can benefit from the standard

Dear Readers,

Rising energy costs, increasing competitive pressure, and stricter environmental regulations – today, more than ever, companies face the challenge of optimizing their energy consumption. In our technical reports, we have repeatedly referred to ISO 50001 in this context. This standard offers a proven, systematic approach to using energy more efficiently, reducing costs, and operating more sustainably. But what exactly is behind this standard? And how can you benefit from its implementation? In the following, we aim to answer these questions for you.

A deeper look into ISO 50001

Key requirements of the standard

DIN EN ISO 50001 is an internationally recognized standard for energy management systems (EnMS) that helps your company or organization systematically improve energy efficiency and evaluate or implement new energy-efficient technologies. It is applicable across all industries and enables a sustainable improvement of energy efficiency, energy use, and energy consumption. The standard defines requirements for the establishment, implementation, and continuous improvement of an EnMS, thereby ensuring long-term energy savings. It was first published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011 and has been available in its revised version, ISO 50001:2018, since August 2018.

Because it is based on the High-Level Structure (HLS) – a common framework for management system standards – it can be easily integrated with other management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). By using the proven Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, it ensures that improvement measures are firmly embedded in business processes on a lasting basis.

1. Responsibility of top management
Top management is responsible for energy management. They must define a clear energy policy, set strategic objectives, and provide the necessary resources. This ensures that energy efficiency becomes a central part of the corporate culture.

2. Energy review and organizational context
Companies must analyze internal and external factors that affect their energy consumption. A detailed energy review provides precise data on energy sources, consumption, and potential savings.

3. Objective setting and action planning
Based on the energy review, specific energy objectives must be defined. These are supplemented with relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) and targeted measures to improve efficiency. Companies must also analyze risks and opportunities to minimize possible negative impacts at an early stage.

4. Continuous monitoring and control
Significant energy consumption must be monitored regularly. This requires precise measuring equipment, modern software solutions, and load management systems. Only in this way  companies can analyze and optimize their progress in real time.

5. Regular evaluation and continuous improvement
The effectiveness of the EnMS is verified through internal audits and management reviews. Companies must document how they continuously improve their energy efficiency and whether the defined objectives have been achieved.

The benefits of ISO 50001 certification

The implementation of a certified energy management system offers numerous economic and strategic benefits:

1. Direct cost benefits

  • Savings through reduced energy consumption and optimized energy use.

2. Sustainability and image effects

  • Reduction of CO₂ emissions and an active contribution to climate protection.
  • Enhancement of public and corporate image through demonstrable sustainability.
  • Strengthening customer and business partner trust in the company’s energy responsibility.

3. Competitive advantages

  • Market differentiation through a sustainable profile and efficient energy use.
  • Increased competitiveness through continuous improvement of energy management processes.

4. Regulatory relief

  • Exemption from energy audits according to DIN EN 16247-1, resulting in less bureaucratic effort.
  • Eligibility for compensation for indirect CO₂ costs under the Carbon Leakage Regulation or electricity price compensation.
  • Compliance with legal requirements and energy-saving obligations, e.g., under the Energy Efficiency Act.

5. Continuous improvement

  • Introduction of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for sustainable optimization steps within the energy management system.
  • Systematic review and adjustment of objectives, energy performance indicators (EnPIs), and measures to achieve long-term efficiency improvements.

Integration with legal requirements

Many national and European laws aim to encourage companies to use energy more efficiently. In our report on the new legislation from April 2025, we already discussed the current deadlines that apply or expire in 2025. ISO 50001 can help companies meet various legal requirements more easily and realize economic benefits. Here are a few examples:

1. Energy audit obligation under the EDL
The German Energy Services Act (EDL-G) requires large companies to carry out an energy audit according to DIN EN 16247-1 every four years. The energy audit obligation can be fulfilled with an energy or environmental management system certified to ISO 50001 or EMAS. This results in a significant reduction in administrative effort and long-term process optimization.

2. CO₂ pricing and BEHG
The German Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG) obliges companies to purchase CO₂ certificates for fossil fuels. A certified energy management system according to ISO 50001 helps to systematically reduce energy consumption and, consequently, emissions, enabling companies to lower their costs in emissions trading. Moreover, an EnMS is required when applying for compensation for indirect CO₂ costs under the SPK funding guideline from August 24, 2022, as well as under the BEHG Carbon Leakage Regulation (BECV).

3. EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED)
The European Energy Efficiency Directive obliges member states and companies to implement measures to reduce energy consumption. Companies operating an energy management system certified to ISO 50001 make a direct contribution to meeting national energy efficiency targets and benefit from regulatory planning security.

4. Sustainability reporting obligation (CSRD)
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) expands reporting requirements for companies regarding their sustainability strategies. With an ISO 50001-certified energy management system, companies can provide reliable energy data and transparently document their progress in reducing emissions.

5. Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG)
The new Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) requires large companies to reduce their energy consumption and implement efficiency measures. ISO 50001 provides a systematic foundation to meet these requirements by helping companies monitor energy flows, identify savings potentials, and establish long-term efficiency strategies.
